The Artist | Meet Lauren Gibson

Lauren Gibson is an artist & photographer based Charlotte, North Carolina.

Lauren creates cinematic, vibrant works of art that explore the essence and specificity of ‘place,’ and its intersection of memory, nostalgia, and the passage of time.

She combines elements of street photography with architectural, landscape and cityscape photography, portraying a wistful and peaceful world, one filled with glimmers of light, vibrant color, and plenty of beauty still left to be discovered.

Hi, I’m Lauren.

I’m an artist and photographer based in Charlotte, North Carolina…. When I’m not at home, you can find me visiting and exploring one of the places where I’ve left a piece of my heart: places like Italy, Paris and the South of France.

This space, Studio Di Sarlo, is the home of my art and photography practice.

Welcome - I’m glad you’re here.

Behind the Name: Studio Di Sarlo

My art studio is named after my Italian family’s surname: Di Sarlo.

I’ve always felt a connection to my Italian heritage, but naming my business after my family’s Italian surname has a bit more meaning, as I am in the midst of pursuing Italian dual citizenship by descent.

The name Studio Di Sarlo is also a tribute to my ancestors, who took an incredibly brave journey into the unknown as they emigrated from Italy to the US. And as I continue to learn more about them, it is truly unexpected, convoluted and absolutely magical.

For me, the name Studio Di Sarlo is a small, daily reminder that I can also take risks and trust myself along my own journey.

About My Artwork

My photographs explore the breathtaking beauty and nostalgia of small, fleeting moments, those that can go undetected and unnoticed too easily. My artwork is, in part, a reminder to myself that life is beautiful.

I’m fascinated with the idea of finding the soul of a place: how physical locations in our world seem to hold their own memories, moments and nostalgia.

I play with vibrant colors, luminosity, deep shadows, and “found” (natural/un-styled) compositions.

I find inspiration in the meditative and immersive act of walking: observing the abundance of beauty among the ordinary, everyday moments, catching a glimpse of the moment alongside me.

I see these moments as if they are stills from a film scene, where the sum is greater than its parts: people, objects, and architecture work together with color, light and shadow to compose a cinematic scene in a single photograph.

I love to create art that visually echoes how memory feels: my work’s soft edges and lower contrast evokes nostalgia, while the luminous, rich tones and the depths of velvety shadows give power to the beauty of the moment and a strong sense of place.

As an artist fascinated with the art of observation, I identify with Henri Cartier-Bresson’s expression of on the essence of photography:

“One eye of the photographer looks wide open through the viewfinder, the other, the closed, looks into his own soul.”

-Henri Cartier-Bresson
